Most financial aid is considered need-based, while others are based upon merit (academics, talent, or performance). To qualify for need-based programs, the student needs to show financial requirements. Need is defined as the difference between the expense of attendance and what the household (both student and parents/spouse where relevant) can reasonably manage to pay towards that cost.

The cost of attendance is developed by the college and consists of prepared for costs a full-time student will reasonably experience for the conventional academic year. The family is considered the very first source of those educational costs in the conference.

To determine the family’s share, the household’s earnings and properties are examined to determine the expected family contribution (EFC). UNC uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to initiate this procedure. With the completion of the FAFSA, UNC will consider a student to have gotten all federal, state, and institutional need-based aid programs. Scholarships can need both requirement and merit evaluation.
